The Unexpected Twists and Turns of Life

by Jordan Dean

When it comes to love, sometimes you’ll find it when you least expect to. That was certainly the case for Shane Ehrsam, a successful business owner and CEO of North Texas Trailers who now lives in Dallas, Texas. The environment that Shane found himself in when he met his wife was anything but what he had imagined in the past. Not only was he much further along in life than he had thought he would be before he found love, but he was also in the middle of a bar in New York City. To make it even crazier they were both seeing different people at the time, but as it would happen, fate always has its way.

Shane had many aspirations as a young man, including getting married one day. He had always wanted to be a business owner like his father who inspired him from a very young age to follow in his footsteps. Shane always enjoyed the time he got to spend with his father and the effort that his father put into the family, hoping that one day he could do the same. Shane also enjoyed the flexibility that came with owning your own business and enjoyed how it led to many fun family vacations when he was a child.

While Shane did enjoy his high school years, it was evident to him that they were definitely “not the glory days.” Shane speculates that his class was particularly cliquey compared to other classes which led to a difficult time for him being able to navigate friendships. He said this was the greatest challenge for him in high school. However, he was able to overcome this challenge and still keeps in touch with one of his high school friends to this day. Shane also reflects on his high school years as the acme of his Christian faith due to his involvement in the church and the environment of the small Christian school.

One of Shane’s most fond memories from high school was winning his final football home game as a Lion, and getting to enjoy that moment with his brothers. Shane played four years of football at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy and says that he enjoyed every moment of it. One of his biggest regrets, however, is that he played the linebacker position instead of playing defensive line which he thinks he could have had much more success in, possibly even having the opportunity to play in college if he had done so.

From day one Shane knew what he wanted to do with his life, but he never expected the way in which he would go about it. Because Shane graduated in the year 2009, it was very difficult for him to find a job at first due to the recession so in his hopes to becoming a successful business owner, Shane found himself traveling all over the country. After school in Texas, he moved to San Diego for four years, and then he found himself moving to Dallas while chasing his dreams of owning his own business. After three years in Dallas, Shane’s job took him to New York where he stayed for another three years. He has now been residing in Dallas again for the past four years.

What Shane is most surprised about, and what he least expected from his life at the moment, is that he has not had any children yet. Having children was the foundation for all of his aspirations towards becoming a business owner, and this still remains his greatest motivation for what he does. Shane’s hope for the future is to be able to have children of his own, and while he enjoyed his experience at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy, thinks that the public school system in Texas is much more equipped than that of Arizona and would be a better way to acclimate his kids to the world than a smaller private school.

Shane believes his best advice for high school seniors nearing the end, from his personal experience, is that they should get away, force themselves into uncomfortable situations, be open-minded and take all the opportunities they can get. Looking back on his life he would not change his career and decisions after high school.  He believes that the unexpected twists and turns of life can always bring about the best things when you least expect them.
